Last year's global soil moisture conditions featured in "BAMS State of the Climate in 2015"

An overview of recent and historical  global soil moisture conditions, based on the CCI soil moisture dataset, was published in the State of the Climate Report, the authoritative annual summary of the global climate published as a supplement to the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.

Page 31 and following of the report (link highlight the global soil moisture conditions in 2015 with respect to their historical context. The CCI soil moisture data show a remarkable similarity with related terrestrial water cycle components such as terrestrial water storage, precipitation, the self-calibrating PDSI and terrestrial evaporation.
